Cik Siti Wan Kembang In Las Vegas?

NST @ 24 July 2010 came out with a front page picture of Ms Universe/Malaysia 2010, Nadine Ann Thomas wearing a costume which she will be wearing at the world pageant finale in Las Vegas on 7 August. The caption at the front page states: "Las Vegas, here she comes".

On the above, I have no issue, but what I read next at the front page and at page 2 of the newspaper caused concern ...

It is reported in the said newspaper that the costume was specially designed for Nadine by a 25 year old Kelantan born designer who was inspired by the legendary Princes/Ruler of Kelantan Cik Siti Wan Kembang.

I am not a fashion designer or even a fashion conscious person - to me wearing faded jeans with my Pagoda/black T-Shirt and slippers would be fashionable enough ...

When I look at the costume to be worn by Nadine which was said to be inspired by Cik Siti Wan Kembang, I started browsing the Internet looking for what might be the "in trend" fashion of a Kelantanese Malay Royalty women in the 15th century ...

I was in great "pain" trying to visualise Cik Siti Wan Kembang wearing a costume as what appeared in NST that Saturday ... Where is the "kain limar"? Where is the prerequisite 3 cloths (kain) which was normally worn by Malay ladies at that point of time?

The most striking "feature" of the designed costume is the fact that Cik Siti Wan Kembang wearing shorts? Not the long pants @ "seluar punjut" ...

I am not an ardent fan of any world pageant - be it Ms Universe, Ms World or whatever "Ms" it might be - but I do know there would be a segment where the competing ladies would be wearing their respective national/traditional costume.

Now, if the above is true and Nadine is going to parade the said costume my issue is does it represent what our traditional costume is/was?

It really a shame as over the years other countries especially those from African nations & the South Americans took great pains in maintaining originality of their respective national costumes but we tend to "fusion" & "modernise" almost everything at the expense of originality ... That's why nowadays you would be frowning every time you see how Joget Asli had been "transformed" into a not so "asli" Joget!!!

To Nadine & the fashion designer, best of luck though .....
